Everyone must take 2 surveys. Make sure you take the ones that are for YOUR CLASS, so read the directions below VERY carefully. Question 2 on the first survey will ask your name and gender. Enter your name in order to get credit. I expect everyone to do both surveys (for 5 points added to your lowest grade at the end of the semester). It shouldn’t take you more than 15 minutes total. If you already did these surveys through the e-mail I sent out then you don’t need to do them again.
If you are in my MWF class (section 06) that meets from 11:30-12:30 Click on the 2 links below to complete BOTH surveys. You must do both to get credit.

If you are in my TR class (section 02) that meets from 9:35am-11am, Click on the 2 links below to complete BOTH surveys. Do both to get credit.

If you are in my TR class (section 03) that meets from 12:45-2:10pm Click on the 2 links below to complete BOTH surveys. Do both to get full credit.

Why does this course matter? Well I talked a little bit about the value of verbal communication skills in class. I also assume you are all in college for a reason, and this course is required so it matters in the “I have to do this to move on” sense.
But I’ll be honest: I’ve done my fair share of sitting in a class going “who cares? I’m never going to use this!” In a sense you’re never going to be asking what Artistotle’s 3 forms of influence are outside of this class, or how to best reach an audience, or give a speech…but these concepts, these ideas, you can use all the time!
For example, when trying to get a favor out of someone you might find yourself carefully crafting your message and words to have optimal influence. AND You will definitely run into people in your life that you need to be cautious with how you phrase things. You’ll be using appeals and persuasion. you may need to persuade a client to stay with you, get a friend to help you move, your significant other to change ____ (you pick), interview someone who has a job you like or works where you want to work, convince someone to hire you, present your ideas at meetings and conferences, explain, train, teach, or just go to a party where you don’t know a lot of people. Don’t you want to be confident in those situations?
See you might now use all the aspects of all the classes you take, but the SKILLS you learn are transferrable to any situation. For us it’:
- gaining confidence
- dealing with nerves
- organization
- research
- handling being put on the spot
- putting complex info into simpler terms (to fit your audience)
- persuasion
- …and I could go on!
All of these things you use no matter what you do or where you go in life, and all of these things you’ll learn in this course. Just trust me, practice, follow my instructions and let me make you a better verbal communicator!
