“I don’t know what to do my speech on!” I hear this a lot. So here are a list of suggestions (some of which have been done as informational speeches). Remember: consider your audience, the occasion and yourself! Don’t forget, this is informational: facts, facts, facts!
Sample topics:
- George Washington, Darwin, Paris, Brittany (or any famous/historical person)
- Art, poetry (how to critique, how to do)
- Terra Cotta Architecture
- stem cell research (what is it)
- Running in marathons
- Heatworm (or any disease in animals)
- diabetes, cancer, MS (or any disease in humans)
- wedding practices in different countries
- Martial arts, softball, soccer, hockey (or any sport–how to style or on the history of, or information on college spots
- Journalism (types of)
- Sudan, Australia, any other country of interest (where to travel, what to see, give a tour, or information on the culture of the country)
- abortion (usually people choose partial birth and talk about what it means. LEAVE you opinion OUT. Do not do this if you have a strong opinion on it.)
- Dream interpretation
- Cliques, body image, or other social issues
- What a jack-o-launtern is, what Black Friday is, or other cultural symbols and “customs” of Americans
- History of tattoos (including other cultures)
- Background on your major, your job field, what a person getting job X would do etc.
- History of prisons (or types or misdemeanors), ways to make intersections safer, your blind spot when driving or other issues of criminal justice.
- How to shop for a bargain, how to follow fashion, what not to wear
- Bands/musical groups/sports teams that interest you
- Exercise, Dance
- Advertising, media effects (from a factual standpoint)
- History of glass
- Immigration
- Blood Diamonds
- Darfur, genocide
- Any historical event
Just start searching online, or watch the news or a talk show and see if something pops up that interests you. Think about you major and what interests you from there.
